Where Does Compromise Begin???

A friend of mine recently went on a trip to Europe. Flying over Germany, he reports that there was just farmland upon farmland to be seen from the plane. His wife commented "We've ruined America".

This made me think of several things, but one common theme prevailed. "Compromise" I thought where did or where does the compromise start? I guess there would be many opinions if a poll was taken. I don't want to get into waters that would be divisive here, but I think that it's something to at least ponder.

I think it's fair to say that we typically know what we're taught and then we build upon that. Whether by finding more information from institutions, by gaining experiential knowledge, or both. What I see in the American model is that we are taught far more "what to think", not "how to think". We are taught in many subjects of study, that this answer is right and this answer is wrong. However, those answers may be situation specific unless you're dealing with something as absolute as mathematics. The majority of us have grown up in governed curriculum. Would it make sense that a governing authority has a built in protection system? I'm not even talking about a conscience protection, but more of a self preservation and subconscious protection. If we have gotten to where we are, are satisfied where we are, then let's build curriculum to continue. I hope I'm making sense... America has been built upon a manufacturing background and we are basically taught to continue in that mentality.

My friend told of the size of a can of coke overseas is much smaller, the portions of food are much smaller, and average people are familiar with the benefits of crop rotation due to flower bulbs not being planted in the same areas each year. I mentioned to him that crop rotation and rest is mentioned as far back as the Old Testament. This is not something new, but what we see stateside is mono-crop farms that repeat the same soil nutrient depletion year after year. Our solution then is to amend the soil we chemical fertilizers that are derived from petroleum. If this doesn't make sense, why has this, or why is this the common practice?

That brings us to compromise. Somewhere along the road, we compromised. Maybe it's a compromise from the inherent labor of stewarding the Earth to the ease of spending more time doing what has become more culturally acceptable. Like baseball games, video games, and fast food. The American culture is plagued with the need for convenience and cultural acceptance. There is level of consciousness that we've traded in for blinders. That level of consciousness could be seen as accountability and the blinders could be identified as convenience.

To try and answer this question adequately, would require a book, but what I see in myself, is that compromise begins with me, in my mind. More often than not, it is motivated by convenience or laziness. This quickly can become "the norm" if someone seizes the opportunity. Think about the microwave oven. A standard in the American kitchen. That's paved the way for processed food that is mass marketed and has become normal. There are certain things that should not be compromised. It may require more labor, more thought, more consideration, but is the compromised counterfeit really worth it? It seems to always be worth it in the moment, but not in the long run.

In the end I guess we can choose to teach our children to make a meal or we can teach our kids how to operate a microwave. Which will you choose?
