What a storm!!
I apologize for not sending any updates for some time. Part of that is due to the storm and part of that is due to it being cool enough to put the "To-Do's" into overdrive. Regardless of the reason, we've been in overdrive for the past month. I've got so many things I want to accomplish before next year. In fact I had started an interior project the day before the storm which had the living room, dining room, and part of the porch a mess. Then the storm hit and priorities shifted substantially.
Thankfully we endured no structural damage as many have. Many have been impacted so much more than us that I feel some hesitation even mentioning that we were impacted. It's been catastrophic for so many. Landscapes forever changed, some literally and some of the heart. If you would like to share how you or your family was impacted, please feel free to comment below.
We are not "Preppers" by nature, but there are things that I feel charged to put in place so that we are better prepared for the next unsuspected upset. Regardless of the source, we will go through some type of upset and more often than not, it's unsuspected. What makes these upsets more tolerable? Community. Well community of the right kind. Not to bash the virtual FB or Instagram community, but that's not the community I'm reffering to. I'm talking about the community that literally helps pick up the pieces with you. One that can offer tried and true solutions.
One of the visions I've had for Embrace Farm is to serve as an aggregate for trust worthy, humanely raised meat and veggies. Another has been to create an aggregate for trustworthy, like minded people who seek to become less dependent on the infrastructure that many of us take for granted.
A 30,000 foot view of that looks like a list provided by our membership of different skillsets or resources you are willing to make available for other members or to the public in times of need. In essence, developing a trustworthy community that utilizes the resources from within. Members would be able to provide information on their skills or even their business if applicable. Other members could then have access to it and utilize in time of need. I've not seen anyone do anything like this, in this way, for this purpose. Maybe because my motive is not monetary but community. I am a big fan of "mutual benefit". That's what I see in nature and if we are to steward in the same way and to a greater extent, this is one way we can do this. So what can I do? I can try to create it, for myself, and for others.
Life is full of teachable moments to learn from, pay attention and learn all you can. The machine that we battle tries to distract us and leave us dependent on things that really don't matter. It takes determination to step out and become more independent. In fact independence isn't the goal, interdependence is, but interdependent on trustworthy, like minded, people. That is the model we see displayed in nature, interdependence.
Please let me know what you think concerning this vision. Whether in the comments, through direct email (embracefarmsc@gmail.com) or text or call. Hurricane Helene left it's mark on many of us. There were many lessons to be learned fromitss impact. I would encourage you to see the opportunity that Helene produced.
